An Update From Heage Windmill by Miller, Anthony
The weather this morning and early afternoon was disappointingly wet, though it became brighter as our close down time approached.
Undaunted we prepared the site for the visitors, and visitors there were, 24 in total, including a family of three that actually picnicked in the rain. Fortunately the parasols for the tables immediately outside the Visitor Centre are large enough to protect one from light rain.
There was so little wind that there was no chance of the sails turning, but the chains were lowered and we were able to demonstrate the shutter opening and closing procedure several times.
Use of the shop was successful and drinks, hot and cold, ice cream, only cold, and certain wrapped food items were available. Most of the flour has now been moved from the mill to the shop, which is a better storage area.
We put parasols up on three of the grass & gravel picnic tables and this gave a nice picnicky look to the area, though they were not used.
The Bric a Brac, as always, created interest. The guides and millers, though not giving a formal introduction to the mill, were involved in conversations with the visitors and historical interest was generated.
The visitors on arrival scanned the QR code or provided contact information; this has become quite normal for people.
The takings were just below £100 and the day was a surprisingly successful sharing of the lovely windmill and its site with local and other people.
A big thank you to my fellow volunteers, who came early to help set up, were here during the day, or came later to help close down
