Optical team smashes fundraising target at Race for Life
COLLEAGUES from Specsavers in Belper are celebrating after raising more than £1,200 for Cancer Research UK after crossing the finish line at the recent Derby Race for Life 10km.
The fundraising effort was inspired by team member at the locally owned and run store, Amanda Green, who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in September 2020. After discovering the cancer had spread to her liver, spleen, lungs, stomach and lymph nodes, Amanda underwent intensive chemotherapy treatment and lengthy hospital stays, including time in intensive care after contracting COVID-19. Following more than two years of rehabilitation, Amanda is now in remission and has been cancer free for five years.
Amanda joined her colleague Charly Grimwood-Butler, completing the 10km course at Markeaton Park after weeks of training.
Amanda says: ‘Taking part in Race for Life was incredibly emotional and rewarding. There were moments when it was tough, but crossing the finish line alongside Charly and to the cheers of support made it all worthwhile. I’m so grateful to everyone who donated and helped us raise more than £1,200 for Cancer Research UK. The groundbreaking treatment I received gave me a second chance at life and I hope the money we have raised will help fund more life-saving research that will help others facing cancer.’
The team exceeded its original fundraising target of £900, thanks to the generosity of customers, friends, family and the local community.
Charly says: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to have completed the challenge and to have raised so much money. Amanda’s determination throughout her cancer journey inspired all of us. We would like to thank everyone who supported us and donated so generously. Surpassing our fundraising target is a fantastic achievement and we’re proud to be able to help support the charity’s vital work.’
Cancer Research UK funds scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer through research into prevention, diagnosis and treatment. While the team has already exceeded their original fundraising goal, there is still time to donate and support the charity’s life-saving work.
