Local charities share community funding from Alfreton and Somercotes funeral directors
Three community projects making a positive impact on people’s quality of life in and around Alfreton and Somercotes have each received a financial boost thanks to the first round of Trafford Lowe Funeral Services’ 2026 Community Assistance programme.
The recipients are:
Mickley Community Volunteer Group – the award will fund the room hire for their ‘Welcoming Spaces’ weekly free cafe at Mickley Community Centre (The Hut) for the next six months. Welcoming Spaces provides hot food and drink, friendly chat, benefits/budget advice, craft activities and games for people of all ages to reduce social isolation.
The Catch Up Club – the award will help support a variety of activities, including crafts and other engaging sessions at this monthly community group. The aim is to support families with SEN children, carers, personal support assistants and service users who are looking for a friendly and supportive environment.
OSCARI – the funds will go towards converting an existing kitchen space into a dedicated food storage room for their community pantry, while also installing a small kitchenette in the main building to create a more welcoming, functional space for the community.
Cheques were presented by Doug Atherton, Funeral Director at Trafford Lowe and Francesa Spencer-Fox of the Community Funds judging panel.
Doug Atherton said: “We are delighted to be able to offer support to these caring projects in the local area. Both groups are making a real difference to people’s lives, providing much-needed, meaningful support to local people.”
Francesa Spencer-Fox added: “We’re proud to highlight the positivity that’s happening right on our doorstep and are looking forward to seeing these projects continue and grow.”
The teams at the Alfreton and Somercotes funeral directors launched their grants programme in February with the aim of providing financial support for community-based projects that benefit people who live within two miles of their two funeral homes. Projects must be non-profit and align with one or more of the fund’s categories; Health, Education, Employment Opportunities and Poverty or Social Deprivation.
The second cycle of their Community Fund grants, when a further £1,000 will be available for good causes, will open for applications on June 29.
