Launch of Derby's 50:50 celebrations: Free festival of culture and creativity to take over city
A vibrant celebration of culture and community is set to transform the city centre to celebrate Derby’s links with Osnabruck in Germany.
Osnabruck Day in Derby will take place on Saturday 6 June, kicking off a year of activity for the city’s 50:50 celebrations. These mark two major milestones in Derby’s history: the 50th anniversary of the Derby-Osnabrück twinning partnership and the anniversary of Derby achieving its official city status.
The June event will bring together a mix of live music, performance, hands-on workshops, and creative art installations celebrating dance and global traditions. With free, family-friendly activities and lively street spectacles, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
Derby City Council is working in partnership with a diverse network of cultural and community partners to present the event, turning key locations into performance hubs that showcase local talent and celebrate Derby’s international connections.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy and Policy, said:
“This festival is a fantastic way to bring our 50:50 celebrations to life, right in the heart of our city. By partnering with our incredible local artists and community groups, we are creating a day that not only honours our historic twinning with Osnabrück and our city status but also showcases the innovation and inclusivity that make Derby so special today.
“Many of our performers have strong links to Osnabruck and have performed there over the years. It’s an invitation for everyone to come together, enjoy some world-class talent, and celebrate our shared heritage and bright future.”
On the day, Osnabruck Square will serve as a focal point for heritage and hands-on art. Visitors can participate in a traditional “Hook an Ay-Up-Me-Duck” stall for a chance to win fairground tokens or explore the intricate craft of well dressing with Spiral Arts.
Artcore, which has an enduring partnership with Osnabruck, will lead activity around the Osnabruck Obelisk. There will be pottery workshops, exhibitions, and a collaborative chalk mural following the themes of the one created in Osnabruck during the city’s annual Maiwoche festival. The square also acts as a vibrant starting point for the Dhol Drummers and a maypole dance location for FOLK3D, mirroring the maypoles used during Maiwoche.
Inside Derby Market Hall, the atmosphere will be electric with a fusion of global cultures. Surtal Arts will present a stunning collaboration of cultural dance styles, with performances and workshops. The venue will also host creative workshops, including screen printing with Department Store & Co, Small Print Company making postcards to send over to Osnabruck, and flag making.
Performances will range from the Derby Choral Union, featuring the musical director from Osnabruck Choir, to the high-energy movement of the Trinity Warriors and the theatrical street show of Sid Bowfin.
The Market Place and Cathedral Green will feature music stages, showcasing a diverse lineup including The Herron Brothers, Marseille, and Carl North. The Market Place will also host traditional fairground favourites – the carousel, German chair-o-planes, and ferris wheel, as well as workshops and storytelling from Down To Earth Derby. Cathedral Green offers a space for “Doodle Art” workshops with Scott Walker, creating a legacy piece of artwork shared with Osnabruck.
Interactive storytelling and music will spill into the streets with walkabout acts like the Babbling Vagabonds’ Lady of the Loom and Deep Down Brass, whose repertoire will bridge the Bavarian oompah spirit and the classic English brass sound. The whimsical A La Puppet Carte will wander through Sadler Gate to celebrate Osnabruck’s puppet theatre. Additionally, The Spot will feature music from Baby People’s DJs and rap artists as well as dance from Nadia Jane Performing Arts.
The celebrations will welcome a civic delegation from Osnabrück for a formal civic service at Derby Cathedral. This gathering brings together community representatives to reflect on the enduring friendship and shared values of the twinning partnership, culminating in a ceremonial re-signing of the friendship agreement between the two cities.
