Belper Chess Club Celebrates Back-to-Back League Triumph
Belper Chess Club is celebrating a major achievement after its First Team secured the Derbyshire Chess Association Division 1 title for the second consecutive year, marking a remarkable period of success for the long-standing local club
A 3 1/2 to 1/2 away win on Monday night against Burton & Lichfield was enough to bring home the title, capping a stellar season in which the Belper first team only lost a single match.
After decades of consistent participation at the highest level, the victory represents a significant milestone. While Belper has maintained Division 1 status for many years, this recent success comes after a 20-year wait between league titles and firmly establishes the club as a dominant force in local chess.
Club Chairman Simon Gilmore praised the team’s performance and commitment throughout the season, stating:
“Belper First team have just won the Derby League for the 2nd consecutive year. We have a very good team and thoroughly deserved the title. Belper has maintained division 1 status for many years but had previously gone 20 years without actually winning the title. The club competes in all divisions and welcomes members at all standards to a friendly evening of chess in a good atmosphere.”
The club’s success is built on a strong foundation of experienced players and emerging talent, reflecting a vibrant and inclusive chess community. Belper Chess Club fields teams across multiple divisions, offering competitive opportunities for players of all levels.
In addition to its competitive achievements, the club prides itself on its welcoming and sociable environment. New members, from beginners to seasoned players, are encouraged to join and experience an evening of chess in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
