Pedal power helps Belper opticians go the extra mile for charity

Published on Friday 27 March 2026

COLLEAGUES at an opticians in Belper have raised more than £180 for this year’s Comic Relief by completing a static bike ride challenge, covering more than 150 kilometres in one day.

Taking it in turns on an exercise bike, the team at Specsavers Belper collectively kept pedalling from 9am until 5pm on Red Nose Day, Friday 20 March.

Store director, Andy McBride, dispensing optician and manager Tara Parkin, and dispensing opticians Hayley Campbell and Anna Wheatley took on the challenge, along with optical assistants Chantelle Warman, Sharon Hibbert, Gaby Palmer, Amanda Green, Becki Yeomans, Chloe Robinson and Chloe Barber. Matching the spirit of their fundraising efforts, and in true Comic Relief style, they all donned their best red outfits to match their Red Noses.

Andy McBride says: ‘It was great to be able to support the amazing work Comic Relief does with this event and, it was a fantastic way to bring the team together for a great cause.

‘We’re really grateful to our customers and the Belper community for supporting our challenge and cheering us on throughout the day, helping us to raise £185 in total. Thank you so much to everyone. I’d also like to say thank you to Charly Grimwood-Butler from the team who did such a brilliant job organising the event.’

Comic Relief was founded in 1985 by Richard Curtis and Lenny Henry and, to date, has raised more than £1.6bn for projects that help support people facing poverty and social injustice, both in the UK and abroad. In 2025, the charity raised more than £38 million. For more information, visit https://www.comicrelief.com/.
