Amber Valley adopts Local Plan in major milestone for the borough
Amber Valley Borough Council has formally adopted its Local Plan, setting out how the borough will grow and develop up to 2040, including where new homes, jobs and infrastructure will go.
This marks a significant milestone, with the borough now having an up-to-date Local Plan in place for the first time in many years.
Work on the Local Plan began in 2019, with extensive evidence gathering, public consultation with residents and stakeholders, and independent examination by a Government-appointed Planning Inspector.
The Inspector’s report confirmed that the Local Plan is legally compliant and sound, subject to main modifications, and the plan now provides an up-to-date planning framework for the area.
Policies within the plan support economic growth, protect and enhance green spaces, and provide affordable housing alongside a mix of homes to meet different needs.
Alongside this, new development will be supported by infrastructure, with measures in place to address climate change, protect heritage and improve design quality across the borough.
Support for town centres and local businesses also forms a key part of the plan, helping to create and protect jobs across Amber Valley.
The Local Plan replaces the previous plan adopted in 2006 and now forms part of the statutory development plan, carrying full weight when planning applications are considered across Amber Valley.
Cllr Emma Monkman, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning, Regeneration & Estates, said:
“This is an important moment for Amber Valley.
“People don’t always see what sits behind planning decisions, but this plan will shape the future of the borough for years to come.
“It helps make sure new development is properly planned, supported by infrastructure, and balanced with protecting the places people value.
“It also ensures future development is guided to the right locations and of a quality that reflects our towns and communities.
“I’d like to thank the officers who have worked on this over a number of years, helping to ensure the future needs of our residents are at the heart of the plan.
“It’s taken a lot of work to get here, and this is a significant step for our communities.”
Planning decisions will now be guided by the Local Plan, providing greater clarity and certainty for residents, businesses and developers.
The Local Plan 2022-2040 will now play a central role in shaping the future of Amber Valley.
The Local Plan and supporting documents are available to view online at www.ambervalley.gov.uk/localplan, in local libraries across the borough and at council offices.
