Winter Driving Safety Advice Following Snow and Ice Across Derbyshire
A significant amount of snow and ice has been experienced across Derbyshire over the weekend, resulting in numerous incidents involving drivers being caught out by the challenging weather conditions.
Even the most experienced drivers can fall victim to black ice, so all road users are being reminded of the importance of driving according to the prevailing road conditions.
For some new drivers, this may be their first winter as a car owner. It is essential that they adapt their driving style to suit the conditions and follow the guidance below.
Drivers of manual vehicles are advised to pull away slowly, using second gear if necessary to keep engine revs low and maintain traction. The clutch should be released gently to avoid wheel spin. Acceleration should be smooth and at low revs, changing up to a higher gear as early as possible. Corners should be approached steadily, steering smoothly and avoiding braking while turning.
Drivers of automatic vehicles should follow similar principles. They should drive slowly and anticipate corners and hills, allowing speed to be reduced or increased gradually. Those with newer automatic vehicles are advised to check whether a ‘snow mode’ or ‘winter driving mode’ is available. As engine braking is limited in automatic vehicles, it is vital to reduce speed early and brake gently.
All drivers are also advised to:
- Allow extra time before setting off to fully defrost vehicles, ensuring windscreens and lights are completely clear, and to accommodate slower driving conditions.
- Drive slowly and maintain safe stopping distances, increasing the gap to the vehicle ahead, as stopping distances can be up to ten times longer in poor weather.
- Give more warning than usual to other road users when turning, stopping, or changing lanes.
- If a skid occurs, steer gently into it and avoid braking or accelerating until control is regained.
- When driving uphill, leave plenty of space ahead or wait until the road is clear to maintain a steady speed.
- Check tyres regularly to ensure they meet legal tread requirements, as worn tyres are more likely to lose grip.
- Plan journeys in advance, check for delays or road closures, and carry essential items such as warm clothing, sturdy footwear, and a shovel where possible.
- Ensure mobile phones are fully charged and inform someone of the intended route.
- Avoid driving in snowy or icy conditions where possible.
Drivers are also encouraged to be patient with others on the road. While some may be experienced in winter driving, for others this may be their first experience of snow and ice.
