Amber Valley Residents Encouraged to Move More
A vision for Amber Valley where everyone is able to be active and move more every day, no matter their age, background or where they live, has been outlined in a new borough-wide strategy.
Move More Amber Valley is a plan to help everyone move more every day, whether it’s walking, playing, gardening, going to the gym, or taking part in sports.
It recognises that many factors affect how much we move, such as age, health, beliefs, family, culture and our environment, and not everyone has the same opportunities to be active.
The strategy acknowledges that some people need more support to be active, including people living with a long-term condition and/or disability, people out of work or at risk of worklessness, people and families living on a limited income, young people and older people.
The plan outlines a collaborative approach with many organisations and services working together with the community, focusing on where the need is greatest and empowering communities to drive change to make it easier for everyone to move more.
Key to this are three shared priorities:
• Move More for Better Health: Creating the right conditions for everyone to move more for a healthy life
• Move More Mindsets: Cultivating a culture that encourages movement as part of everyday life
• Move More Spaces: Fostering safe, inclusive and connected spaces where people can move more
A number of local and national partners have worked together to shape the Move More Amber Valley plan, including Amber Valley Borough Council, Amber Valley CVS, Get Out Get Active Amber Valley, Places Leisure, Derbyshire County Council, Joined Up Care Derbyshire, Arch Primary Care Network, Trilogy Leisure, Amber Valley School Sport Partnership, Activity Alliance and Active Derbyshire.
The development of the Move More Amber Valley strategy has been funded by Amber Valley Partnership. The strategy was recently endorsed by Amber Valley Borough Council at a cabinet meeting where it was presented by Cllr John McCabe, cabinet member for the Communities and Street Pride Portfolio.
Cllr John McCabe said: “We know that being active has huge benefits for our health and wellbeing, but not everyone has the same opportunities to move more. That’s why we’ve worked closely with our partners to create this strategy, making it easier for people to be active in ways that suit them. With the launch of Move More Amber Valley, we want to inspire more people and organisations to get involved and help make moving more a natural part of
daily life.
“Move More Amber Valley directly supports Amber Valley Borough Council’s commitment to reducing health inequalities and improving the quality of life for our residents. By working together with our communities and partners, we can create the right conditions to help people move more every day, building healthier habits that last a lifetime and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to lead an active, healthier life.”
Craig Homer, Strategic Lead, Active Derbyshire, said: “We’re aiming for a place where healthy habits start young and last a lifetime – and moving more is a normal part of daily life.
“With the launch of this strategy we hope that more people and partners in Amber Valley will get involved and, together, make a difference.”
The strategy was officially launched at an event at the Charles Hill Centre in Loscoe on Wednesday 19 March 2025, where partners considered what actions they could each take to help bring the plan to life.
