Local volunteers celebrate Belper's heritage on foot
Volunteers from a local landmark invite residents of Belper and beyond to join them for guided walks this year.
Belper North Mill is a well-known local landmark, towering over the town and Belper River Gardens adjacent to the red-brick East Mill. Once the home of a museum, the mill’s story is now brought to life by dedicated volunteers since the museum closed in 2021.
The Belper North Mill volunteers have a busy programme of guided walks planned for 2024, helping to bring to life Belper’s story from the time of the Normans to its more famous history as a cotton-spinning town.
“The walks are a great opportunity to get some exercise, meet new people and learn about the town’s history” says volunteer Linda. “We have family-friendly walks, ghost walks and pub walks planned, as well as history walks on different themes. There’s something for everyone”.
“We had a successful year of leading walks last year, and we’re looking forward to welcoming even more people in 2024” adds walk leader and Chair of Belper North Mill Trust, Ian Hill. “We are a very friendly group, and we hope visitors and Belper residents alike will join us. We are a local charity, and the walks are one of the ways we raise funds for our mission of keeping Belper's heritage alive.”
The first walk of the year takes place on Saturday 24 February at 2.30pm at Openwoodgate crossroads, Belper (DE56 0SD) on the theme of Belper and Morley Park Railway. Walks continue throughout the year to December, taking place most weekends in the summer months. The volunteers also run children’s activities during the school holidays, including Easter and May half term.
