Public Consultation About The Refurbishment of Somerlea Park Junior School, Bank Street, Somercotes
Somerlea Park Junior School has been chosen as part of the Government’s 10-year school rebuilding programme to upgrade school buildings across England that were considered to be in the worst condition. Of more than 22,000 schools and sixth form colleges, Somerlea Park Junior School has been prioritised by the Department for Education to be one of the first 50 rebuilding projects to progress under this programme. Only one other school in Derbyshire is included on this Phase 1 priority list.
The Redevelopment of Somerlea Park hopes to support the school in achieving an improved environment that helps to support its mission statement. ‘Believe. Achieve. Succeed’
Bowmer and Kirkland, Derbyshire construction company have been appointed by the Department for Education (DfE) to construct Somerlea Park Junior School. Key deliverables for the new primary school will be to provide a safe sanctuary with warmth and security at the heart of the design. The space will provide an environment which aims to aid and support learning of local children and provide enhanced accessibility. Open space and sporting facilities to be relocated and maintained, with new outdoor play equipment to be installed.
The new school proposes the introduction of Modern Methods of Construction with sustainability interventions including Low and Zero Carbon Technologies such as Air Source Heat Pumps which will help reduce costs for the school through provision of hot water and heating to the building and Solar Panels.
The new school will provide children with additional spaces where the children will be able to have time out from class in a calmer environment. The school wants to improve layout for visually impaired children to ensure that there are clearer access routes to all areas within the school including the outside space.
The new school will have enhanced capacity for improved technology and power provision from sustainable sources. Including assistive technology and improved classroom layout and acoustics for children who may have hearing or auditory difficulties.
The proposed redevelopment of Somerlea Park school subject to planning approval will commence April 2024 with an estimated practical completion of February 2026. The Works to construct the new school are to be planned to ensure safety and minimise environmental impact.
The Public Consultation meeting will be held on Wednesday, 13th September 2023 between 5pm and 9pm with representatives from both Bowmer and Kirkand and Planning and Development consultant Dobson-Grey who will present the proposed scheme. This is an opportunity for residents of the community and parents of students to attend and share their thoughts in advance of the formal planning submission late September.
