Grants Available To Celebrate His Majesty The King's Coronation
Derbyshire residents organising community events to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III are being urged by Derbyshire County Council to take advantage of a number of grants available from the authority and other sources.
Just like the Platinum Jubilee, there is expected to be a wide variety of community events, from large scale gatherings to smaller get-togethers, to celebrate the historic occasion.
The Coronation itself takes place on Saturday 6 May and many of the events are likely to be spread over that weekend, as an extra bank holiday has been added to the calendar on Monday, 8 May.
Grants ranging from a few hundred pounds up to £10,000 are available to community groups, clubs, local charities and organisations holding celebrations.
The county council’s Derbyshire Grants scheme has grants of up to £1,000 available for events that meet certain criteria, and as it can take up to three weeks to assess an application, people are being urged to make their applications as soon as possible to ensure they can be processed in time and the money released to successful groups.
To find out more about Derbyshire Grants and submit an application groups should go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/derbyshiregrants
Grants for Coronation events can also be applied for from Derbyshire County Council councillors, following the recent extension of the authority’s Members Community Leadership Scheme (MCLS).
Every year each of the 64 county councillors receives £3,860 under the MCLS which local groups can apply for to go towards community causes, activities and events. This year each councillor has been given an additional £1,500 which groups can apply for to hold Coronation-related events. The same amount was added last year to support groups celebrating the Platinum Jubilee.
Groups seeking MCLS funding should contact their local county councillor explaining the nature of their project, activity or event, the amount needed, what other funding may be available and how it will benefit the community. To find out more and to check the name of the local county councillor in their area, people should go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/communityleadershipscheme
For larger grants, groups and organisations may want to apply to the National Lottery Awards for All scheme, where funding from £300 up to £10,000 is available to support events and activities to celebrate and commemorate the Coronation on or around the long weekend (6-8 May).
Projects could be a one-off event or activity taking place around the Coronation weekend, such as cultural festivals or activities to promote community cohesion, events or activities engaging people from different generations or events aimed at reducing isolation and encouraging people so socialise, for example a street party or community cooking event.

Derbyshire County Council leader Councillor Barry Lewis said: “We saw such a wide variety of events and activities held to commemorate and celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last year and I know that Derbyshire is already gearing up to mark the Coronation of King Charles III.
“It’s an historic occasion and I hope that groups and organisations from across the county will apply for the available funds to get their events and commemorative activities off to a flying start.
“We’re very pleased to be able to extend the Members Community Leadership Scheme funding for another year and I know that through our councillors and the hard work of local groups and charities, Derbyshire communities will benefit from the extra money available.”
County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Carol Hart, speaking about the council’s Derbyshire Grants scheme, said: “Many of the grants awarded last year from the scheme went to support Platinum Jubilee events and we want to make sure that people are aware they can apply if they are involved in organising community events to mark the Coronation of King Charles.
“There is still time to apply and I’d encourage groups to look at the categories and get their applications in as soon as possible so that, if successful, they will have the money in time.”
