Local opticians focused on supporting community foodbank
AN OPTICIANS in Belper has chosen to support local charity Hope for Belper for the second year running.
Specsavers at 41 King Street has become a collection point for the charity’s foodbank, Food and Community Hub and is appealing for non-perishable food items and toiletries. All donations will be used by the charity to create parcels to provide food and basic essentials to in the local community who are referred to the charity in times of crisis.
‘Having supported Hope for Belper in the past, we’ve seen first-hand how our customers and the local community come together and know we can all do it again. To be able to help out this year, especially during the current cost of living crisis, is really important to us a team,’ explains Specsavers Belper retail director Uan Gohil. ‘Sadly, the winter months are going to be tough for many with the prospect of more people in our local community having to turn to foodbanks to help which means they need donations now more than ever.
‘If you are able to add a couple of extra items to your weekly shop whether it’s a tin of soup, box of cereal, teabags or toiletries like shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste it will really make a difference to those less fortunate,’ continues Uan.
It is estimated tens of thousands of people turned to foodbanks as a result of the pandemic with many more families now facing the prospect of needing the extra help they provide as a rise in food and energy prices see household costs continue to rise.
The Food and Community Hub, formally The Basic Idea Food Bank, is one of a number of Hope for Belper’s projects providing immediate, practical help for people in need in the local community. Based at the Baptist Chapel on Bridge Street, next to The Devonshire it is open on Tuesdays and Fridays between 12 noon and 2pm.
Specsavers Belper will be taking donations until Saturday 17 December 2022. For more information and an up-to-date list of the most wanted items go to http://facebook.com/hopeforbelper/
