Applications Now Open For Derbyshire County Council's New Year Community Adult Education Courses

Published on Tuesday 7 December 2021

Residents can sign up to learn something new in the New Year with Derbyshire County Council as applications are now open for its new term of adult education courses.

The new term starts on Monday 10 January with courses running throughout the term up until Easter.

Residents can find and book courses online at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/learningforleisure or pick up a brochure at their local adult community education centre or county council library.

A wide range of courses are on offer across the county giving residents the chance to gain a new qualification or skill, to retrain or improve employment opportunities.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Education Councillor Alex Dale said: “We’re keen to offer adults the opportunity to upskill and gain new qualifications and our adult education courses are a great way of getting the New Year off to a positive start.

“We have courses running in the daytime and evenings to help people of all ages and stages in life to fit education around work, childcare and other commitments.

“We know the Coronavirus pandemic has created changes to the way many people work and manage their time as well as their priorities or thoughts about the future, and one of our adult education courses could provide that first step to something new and exciting they would not have even considered before.

“It could be a new career, a new opportunity or a new challenge and we’d encourage people to take a look and see what a wide range of courses we have available which could help make that happen for them.”

Courses include:
•    Maths and English from entry level to GCSE
•    Counselling skills
•    Lip reading and signed communication
•    Working with children
•    Personal development such as dealing with stress and how to gain confidence.
•    Languages
•    Digital skills such as using a computer for work

There are also courses available for residents who are looking to explore new hobbies and interests including:
•    Yoga
•    Pilates
•    Tap dancing
•    Recycling crafts
•    Floristry

Councillor Dale added: “Developing a hobby is a great way of making friends, improving mental health and wellbeing and tackling loneliness, particularly after the challenges we’ve faced with lockdowns and restrictions over the past two years.

“We have a course for everyone, so why not make 2022 the year to try something different.”

Residents can apply for the courses up until the start date of their chosen course but are advised to make sure they apply in advance before spaces fill up.

Classes are held at the council’s adult community education centres around the county as well as in many local community venues.

Residents can book onto a course by calling, emailing, or visiting the centre where their chosen course is being held. Details of local centres and county council libraries – where people can also pick up course brochures – are available at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/ACEcentres and www.derbyshire.gov.uk/libraries
