Covid costs lead to council tax increase
Costs relating to the Covid-19 pandemic have left Amber Valley Borough Council around £550,000 out of pocket and partly led to a council tax increase of £5 per year on a Band D property. This 2.9% increase (less than 10p per week) was agreed at Amber Valley Borough Council’s Full Council meeting on 3 March.
Over the past 12 months the pandemic has also meant the council has received less income than it budgeted for in a number of areas, including:
- car parking
- green waste service
- trade waste service
- Alfreton indoor market
- licensing and land charges
- reduction in recycling credits
Added to these is compensation to leisure centre operators of over £1.4m for lost income during the forced closure of facilities.
Commented, Leader of the Council, Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams: "The past 12 months have been extremely tough for the council. The financial outlook would have been testing even without the pandemic, but this has created even more pressure on our budget. However, we do now have a plan in place which will deliver savings over the next four years, and lead us to a balanced budget and a healthy position in terms of our cash reserves."
