Council submits final bid for Heanor town centre regeneration
The final stage of a bid process to secure funding to regenerate Heanor town centre, has been completed and now Amber Valley Borough Council must wait to see if it is awarded over eight and a half million pounds from the Government’s Future High Street Fund.
The sum of £8,592,837 was included in a provisional offer made to the council in December of last year to develop this exciting proposal and the council’s latest submission outlines how the money will deliver the scheme.
The Future High Street Fund is a £675 million Government grant to help towns across the county to respond to changes in retailing and consider how we use our town centres and aims to regenerate town centres as attractive places to live and work for the future.
The council could only put forward one town and Heanor was identified as the Amber Valley location that demonstrated the highest need and has potential to make a transformational change to secure its long-term future and offered the best chance of securing the grant to support the borough.
The aim of the project is to deliver a sustainable future for Heanor and encourage positive benefits for those to live, work and enjoy the town, and have evolved around three core themes.
- Heart of Heanor
The central Market Place will continue to form the heart of the town centre, offering flexible space to support business, events, and public enjoyment. The townscape will improve connectivity into the heart, and across the town, and connect with the lower areas of the retail park, linking by improved pedestrian walkways improving accessibility and recognise the links to green space for positive Healthy Heanor benefits. - Heanor Hub
The regeneration on the site of the former Heanor Grammar School is a key aspiration of the High Street bid. The plans to bring back this much-loved building for mixed-use business and community development and the provision of leisure facilities, for examples potential cinema and food and beverage outlets on the site to encourage greater enjoyment of the town centre in the evenings. The aspirations for this site to protect its long-term future and the fabric of the listed building and aim to stimulate employment opportunities in the town centre. - Heanor is Home
The Heanor is home element aims to work with partners to deliver quality homes and affordable town centre living and regenerate an area of under-utilised land for positive benefit. The homes are dependent on securing a developer partner and will offer greater choice and availability of residential property in the heart of the town centre, to allow residents to enjoy easy access on foot to the town and its facilities.
Amber Valley Borough Council, Heanor and Loscoe Town Council, Heanor stakeholders and developers are working together to bring positive change for the town and invest in its future.
Commented, Councillor Ben Bellamy, Amber Valley Borough Council’s portfolio holder for regeneration and community safety: "An incredible amount of hard work has gone into this bid from council officers, members and our partners, and we are now eagerly awaiting the outcome of those efforts in the next few weeks. The plans put forward would have a huge impact in helping revitalise Heanor and it would be wonderful to get the go-ahead to begin work."
