PCC calls for one rule for Derbyshire as lockdown eases

Published on Wednesday 25 November 2020

Speaking ahead of the Government's Covid Winter Plan, and the widely anticipated stricter tier system for post lockdown, Derbyshire's PCC Hardyal Dhindsa is calling on the Government to keep the rules for the entire county and City the same.

If the tiers are based purely on infection rates, parts of Derbyshire would enjoy greater freedoms than others.  This, says the Commissioner, would put added pressure on the police and encourage people to travel to areas with fewer restrictions.

"We need a unified approach," he said.  "We have come through this appalling time together, as one Derbyshire, and now is not the time to spread division and confusion.

"Different tiers across the county would make consistent enforcement of the restrictions impossible," he explained.  "There would be no cohesion, people in higher tiered communities would simply travel, potentially taking the virus with them, to areas of low infection.  As we have seen already, tier borders splitting small neighbourhoods are difficult to manage.

"That's why I want to thank the vast majority of Derbyshire's residents who have tried so hard to keep infection levels down. We have been united in our goal.  I understand that 2020 has been more than difficult, but we must continue to work together to battle this virus.

"I would also like to thank the police.  Derbyshire Constabulary has worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to keep people safe, to engage, to encourage, to educate and use enforcement robustly when required.  We need a whole county approach going forward to remove uncertainty for everyone involved, public and police.  It's the safest solution."
