Christmas Eve Carols in Belper Cancelled
It is with deep regret that Cllr John Porter, Mayor of Belper is forced to announce that the annual carol service has had to be cancelled.
There was a real desire that our town could get together on Christmas Eve to celebrate in song following a second year of sacrifice and denial but concerns over public health have worsened in the past few days. Hopefully this present virus strain is less harmful but is far more contagious and there is a huge risk that our health services could therefore be overrun this winter. We have been exploring ways that our service in the Market Place could be made safe but we have come to the realisation that a mass event in Belper, with up to 2,000 in attendance, is just not wise at this time. Cancelling the carol service is therefore a preventative action to safeguard our community and to lessen the burden on the NHS.
I know that once again Covid is having a negative impact on our lives but as long as we face these challenges together I know that we will get through this. On behalf of all at Belper Town Council I want to thank everyone for there strength and forbearance through these troubled times. For some their loss has been hard to bear and our thoughts and love go out to them.
We must now look forward with hope to 2021. Please keep safe this Christmas and New Year.
Cllr John Porter
Mayor of Belper
