Salcare CEO Completes Epic 500-Mile Charity Cycle Challenge
Salcare CEO Don Davis has completed an incredible 500-mile charity cycle challenge, finishing his epic journey at Carlisle Castle after cycling the length of National Cycle Network Route 6.
What began as a planned 445-mile challenge to celebrate Don’s 60th birthday became an even bigger achievement, with Don deciding to round the distance up to a remarkable 500 miles.
Don set off from Paddington on Saturday 26 September, following Route 6 northwards through the country before finally reaching Carlisle Castle, completing the challenge yesterday.
The challenge has been raising money for Salcare and Beatson Cancer Charity, two charities that are particularly close to Don’s heart.
Over the course of the challenge, Don faced everything from sunshine and long days in the saddle to rain, strong winds, tough climbs and plenty of aching muscles. The infamous Winnats Pass provided one particularly challenging section, while the weather made some of the later stages even tougher.
When asked about the highs and lows of the challenge, Don’s highlights included the canals, railways, towpaths and the incredible scenery along the route.
The lows were somewhat more predictable after 500 miles in the saddle, with Don admitting that getting back on the bike each morning with aching muscles was becoming increasingly difficult – particularly in the saddle area!
But despite the aches, pains and challenging conditions, Don kept going and successfully completed the full 500 miles.
Don Davis, CEO of Salcare, said:
“It’s a fantastic feeling to have finally completed the challenge. There were definitely some tough days along the way, but the scenery, the people I met and the support from everyone following the challenge made it all worthwhile.
“I originally set out to cycle 445 miles, so I thought I may as well round it up to 500 while I was at it! There were certainly moments when I questioned that decision, particularly first thing in the morning when I had to get back on the bike!
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated, shared the fundraising page, sent messages, waved me on or simply followed the journey. It has been brilliant to have that support behind me.
“Most importantly, I hope we can continue to raise as much as possible for Salcare and Beatson Cancer Charity. Both are fantastic causes and I’m really proud to have completed the challenge for them.”
There is still time to support Don’s fundraising challenge, with every donation helping to make his 500-mile achievement count.
