Three community groups share funding from Alfreton and Somercotes funeral directors
Three community projects supporting local children, families and people experiencing bereavement have received a financial boost thanks to the Trafford Lowe Funeral Services’ 2026 Community Assistance programme.
The recipients are:
Bridging Minds Collective – the £494 award will help provide funded bereavement therapy for people in Somercotes and Alfreton who may otherwise struggle to afford support. The funding will provide 30 face-to-face therapy sessions as well as 14 online therapy subscriptions. The community group supports local people and families with SEND, mental health and bereavement needs.
Lilly Street Lions FC Under 8s – the £500 award will help the newly established grassroots football club with its league fees and provide zipped hooded tops to keep its young players warm during training and matches. The Alfreton club aims to give local children a safe and positive environment in which to stay active, develop skills, build confidence and enjoy being part of a team.
Supporting Communities – the £500 award will fund five healthy eating and wellbeing sessions at Ironville Railway Carriage Youth Club. The sessions will give local young people practical experience of healthy eating, simple food preparation and budgeting, alongside activities focused on emotional wellbeing and positive lifestyle choices.
Representatives gathered at Trafford Lowe’s Somercotes office on September 17th, where cheques were presented by Doug Atherton, Funeral Director at Trafford Lowe, and Francesca Spencer-Fox of the Community Fund judging panel.
Doug Atherton said: “It’s wonderful to be able to support three very different projects that are all making a positive contribution to their local communities.
“From providing vital bereavement support and opportunities for children to enjoy grassroots football, to helping young people develop skills that can improve their health and wellbeing, these grants will make a real and practical difference.”
Francesca Spencer-Fox added: “One of the great things about the Community Fund is discovering the fantastic work that is happening right on our doorstep. These groups are responding directly to the needs of local people and we are delighted to be able to help them continue and develop their work.”
The teams at the Alfreton and Somercotes funeral directors launched their grants programme in February with the aim of providing financial support for community-based projects that benefit people living within a three-mile radius of their two funeral homes.
Projects must be non-profit and align with one or more of the fund’s categories: Health, Education, Employment Opportunities and Poverty or Social Deprivation.
The latest awards follow the first round of funding earlier this year, when Mickley Community Volunteer Group, The Catch Up Club and OSCARI also received support from the programme.
