Shoplifter tracked down and caught by officers after targeting shop in Alfreton
Officers tracked down and arrested a thief who stole a number of items from a shop in Alfreton.
A Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) was on patrol at around 1.45pm on Saturday 31 January when staff at the Boots store on the High Street reported a theft. The shop worker provided a description of the suspect, and the officer immediately began searching the area.
The PCSO located the suspected thief, pursued him and made the arrest.
Waleed Basharat, 26, of Ludlow Road, Birmingham, was charged with theft from a shop and obstructing a police officer in the execution of their duty.
CCTV footage showed Basharat walking around the store with an unknown woman while filling carrier bags with items before leaving without paying and running from the scene.
A number of skincare products worth hundreds of pounds were stolen. The items were later recovered by officers and returned to the store.
During police interview, Basharat admitted he had no right to take the items and intended to sell them.
He pleaded guilty to the charges at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Monday 2 February.
He is due to be sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday 13 February.
