Amber Valley Borough Council awarded funding for long awaited skatepark

Published on Friday 24 March 2023

SKATE fans are set to benefit from a UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) allocation of Government funding, which will see a brand new £200,000 community wheeled sports facility installed – something which has long been an aspiration for young people in the town.

Heanor is the only town in Amber Valley which does not have an outdoor wheeled sports facility – but the new, inclusive facility will cater for users of all ages and abilities, from novice through to the more experienced rider. It will enable more local residents, in particular children, young people and families, to engage in being active and moving more which can have a positive impact on their physical health and mental wellbeing.

Gravity Engineering are the appointed contractors with plenty of experience having put their name to over 300 skateparks around the UK. Gravity Engineering’s Design Director is ex-pro skater, Marc Churchill. The skatepark is likely to become a destination venue encouraging more people from further afield to visit the area.

The proposed location for the development is Lockton Avenue Playing Fields, subject to site surveys.

Councillor Trevor Ainsworth, Amber Valley’s cabinet member for Environment, said: “The UKSPF funding allocation has provided a fantastic opportunity to help us address and deliver the needs of our local communities – a skatepark in Heanor has been talked about for many years so it’s great news that we’re now able to progress with this project. I would personally like to thank all the Officers from Amber Valley Borough Council that have been involved in successfully bringing £2.9million of government UKSPF funding to the Borough”.
