Easter adventures with the National Trust in Derbyshire and the Peak District

Published on Thursday 16 February 2023

Bring the whole family together this Easter and treat your loved ones to a spring adventure with the National Trust.

From getting active in the great outdoors, to spotting the signs of spring, and experiencing nature bursting into life at the places the National Trust cares for there are over 190 Easter trails to choose from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Every single National Trust Easter trail is different and celebrates nature, history and beauty. Follow winding garden paths, crash along muddy woodland trails or time travel with adventures to historic mansions.

And of course, each National Trust Easter trail ends with a chocolate egg, or vegan and free from egg, made here in the UK using cocoa that’s responsibly sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

National Trust Easter egg trails cost £3 per child, plus normal National Trust admission/free entry for National Trust members.

Easter trails in Derbyshire and the Peak District:

Calke Abbey
With peeling wallpaper and abandoned rooms, Calke Abbey is the un-stately home, telling the story of the decline of a grand family estate. The estate is approximately 1,000 hectares, with acres of this accessible to explore. Upon visiting, you’ll discover formal walled gardens, stable yards, a natural play area at Calke Explore, and much more.

Come and join the Easter adventures at Calke from Saturday 1 April until Sunday 16 April. With fun for little legs or those looking for a bigger adventure, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Discover ten activities on the trail around the parkland, stable yards, and pleasure grounds. You’ll have to use all your senses to complete the activity challenges and make it to the end of the trail.

The Children’s Country House at Sudbury
The Children’s Country House has been created with children at its heart making it the perfect family Easter day out.

From 1 April, you can celebrate Easter in the Activity Hub. Make and take home four themed crafts, perfect creative fun for the whole family (£5 per child and bookable online with your admission ticket).

Over Easter weekend (7-10 April) get active, be mindful and connect with nature on the Easter Trail. Navigate your way through ten egg stops before reaching the chocolate reward at the end. Don’t forget to keep a look out for the giant grasshoppers as you explore your way around the garden.

Make the most of your visit and make time to also explore the historic country home of the Vernon family in the Hall, take a journey through the history of childhood in the Museum and enjoy something from our seasonal menu in the Fairytale Forest Café.

Please remember to book your visit via the website before arriving.

 Hardwick
Winding its way through parkland scattered with ancient oaks, Hardwick’s drive offers glimpses of the famous house, with its golden stonework, turrets, and sparkling glass. The estate surrounding the Hall, covers around 2,000 acres of stunning parkland, woodland, and farmland.

This Easter, the adventure trail will encourage families to be a hedge detective and find out what creatures are living in the undergrowth. Count bumblebees as you explore the parkland, or maybe you’ll spot the colours of spring in the woodland.

The Easter trail runs from 1-17 April.

Ilam Park, Peak District
Join in an Easter adventure at Ilam Park. The Easter trail - running from 1–16 April, 10.30am-3pm - leads you across the park and garden completing spring and nature themed activities along the way. From cloud spotting and welly wanging, to playing hide and sheep and making the tallest Easter egg stone tower, there’ll be lots to do before claiming a chocolate prize.

Elsewhere in the White Peak, there’ll be signs of spring coming to life all around. Visit the historic zig zag garden at Ilam Park for a colourful display of crocus, anemone, scilla, snowdrops and wild garlic. Lambs will be bouncing around the parkland and along the route over to Dovedale – if you stop at the river Dove or Manifold, you may see dippers bobbing on rocks.

The Manifold Tea-room at Ilam Park is the perfect spot to get a seasonal lunch or hot drink while enjoying picturesque views of Thorpe Cloud.

Kedleston Hall
As the evenings become lighter and the natural world reawakens, there are plenty of signs around Kedleston that spring is coming. From frolicking lambs in the parkland to the daffodils, primula and bluebells that blanket the forest floors - it’s the perfect setting for a stroll with the family.

Go on a self-led outdoor trail at Kedleston Hall this Easter (6-11 April, 10am-3pm daily). Complete the activities along the 1.7 mile walk to earn your chocolate egg (non-chocolate version also available). A fun way to explore the extensive parkland at Kedleston is the orienteering course - suitable for families, friends, dog walkers and ideal for complete beginners. Buy a map from the shop (£1.50) and go searching for marked points across the park. You can run it, jog it, or stroll - you set the pace.

Longshaw Estate, Peak District
There are lots of opportunities for outdoor adventures at Longshaw this spring. Explore the estate with the Easter Adventure trail, completing ten fun tasks along the way. Join the trail, at the Welcome Building where you’ll be given a trail sheet to guide you, and bunny ears to help you take part true in Easter style! Don’t forget to claim your chocolate prize at the end of the trail which runs from 1 – 16 April.

With tumbling streams and tranquil woodlands, Longshaw is also a countryside haven and a great place to meet friends and family for a springtime walk. Along the way, listen for birdsong, spot Mandarin ducks in the pond, and look out for new green shoots appearing all around.

Why not finish your walk with a seasonal lunch with far-reaching Peak District views in the award-winning café at Longshaw?
