New On-Call and Wholetime Firefighters Begin Training
Over the last week Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) welcomed nine new On-Call Trainee Firefighters and 13 new Wholetime Trainee Firefighters as they began their fire service careers at the Service’s joint police and fire training centre in Ripley.
The trainees who make up On-Call Course 1-23, and Wholetime Course 113 will all undertake a robust training course delivered by the Service’s dedicated team of specialist operational trainers, preparing them for the challenges they will face responding to emergency incidents across Derbyshire.
The nine On-Call Trainees commenced their training on Friday 6 January 2023. They will undergo a six-week course taking place over weekends and some weekdays. When their time in training is complete, they will take up posts on fire stations across the county serving Crich, Duffield, Glossop, Wirksworth, Buxton, and Chapel-en-le-Frith where they will continue their training over a period of two years.
Our Wholetime Trainees from Course 113 started their 14-week training course, which includes a week for Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) training, on Monday 9 January 2023. When their training is complete, they will take up posts on fire stations across Derbyshire on a rotational basis while they complete their 2 year development.
Derbyshire’s Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive, Gavin Tomlinson welcomed all of the new trainees to the Service, he said: “It has been an honour to welcome both our on-call and wholetime trainee firefighters to the Service as they embarked on a career that will see them making a difference to people’s lives, responding to emergency incidents across Derbyshire.
“I look forward to following their progress through training and watching their fire and rescue service career develop over the coming years.”
On-Call Firefighters
On-Call Firefighters are members of our community who are paid to respond to emergencies. They do not staff the fire station 24 hours a day like full time Firefighters but respond when alerted via a pager. They usually have other full-time employment.
Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is currently recruiting On-Call Firefighters for stations right across Derbyshire.
