Public invited to submit questions on rural crime and policing rural areas
Derbyshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster is to scrutinise Derbyshire Constabulary's work in relation to rural crime in her next Performance Scrutiny Meeting.
Commissioner Angelique Foster's role is to hold the Chief Constable Rachel Swann to account for delivering against the priorities set out in her Police and Crime Plan. A series of subject-specific meetings have been arranged to ensure there is detailed scrutiny of the force's performance.
Members of the public are invited to submit questions ahead of the next meeting, which is held virtually, due to take place on Thu 6 Oct at 10.00am.
Questions should be submitted in writing and cannot be in relation to current investigations.
Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster said: "I have been clear since my election that tackling Rural Crime is a key priority. Derbyshire has a vast rural heritage with crimes unique to our landscape, wildlife and industries. These communities deserve a strong and robust policing service and I am determined that the force will deliver on its responsibilities to support and protect lives and livelihoods.
"Derbyshire now has one of the largest rural crime teams in the country and there are plans to build on this. We will continue to invest in specialised training to ensure our rural officers are equipped to respond and understand the communities they police. We also work closely with our partners including the National Farmers' Union to understand how policing services can be improved to better support rural residents and businesses.
"Our partnership work has supported the production of a new Rural Crime Guide providing comprehensive advice on a range of issues including theft, fire and personal safety to help protect residents in an emergency.
"The cost, stress and impact on quality of life for those affected by rural crime is significant. I have listened to many personal accounts of anti-social behaviour, hare coursing, fly tipping, theft of equipment, sheep worrying and damage to property and I understand how vital it is the force provide appropriate support to victims.
"My Performance Scrutiny Meetings are an effective way of holding the Chief Constable to account against these expectations. The force will be required to provide evidence of the steps it has taken to protect our rural communities and identify where improvement is needed. The meeting will also enable local people to highlight any issues that concern them at the highest level by submitting a question to my office in advance."
The meeting will be recorded and published via the Commissioner's website and social media channels as soon as possible after its conclusion.
