Still time for Derbyshire primary schools to enter calendar competition
Calling all primary schools! The deadline to enter Derbyshire Police's calendar competition is fast approaching (30th June).

The challenge:
To create an advice/top tips picture for one of the key safety topics listed below. The picture needs to be on an A4 piece of paper and designed in the landscape position. It should give helpful safety advice that other students in your school would find useful or that parents/carers would need to know.
We have some gaps in our calendar entries at the moment and hopefully your students can help to fill them in by picking one the subjects below! Thanks to all those that have already submitted some fantastic pieces of work to us, we know that our 2023 calendar is going be fabulous!

How to submit your entry:
Schools can submit entries for pupils by scanning the picture and emailing it to: julie.berry@derbyshire.police.uk.
Alternatively, you can post submissions to us using the address below:

Please ensure that the following information is listed on the back of any pictures submitted:
- First name of pupil(s)
- School name
- Year group and Class
- Teacher’s name and email address
Deadline for submissions: Thursday 30th June 2022
What happens next?
A panel will come together to judge the submissions in September and the winners will be announced in October. The winning entries will then be created into a calendar which students/parents/schools will be able to download for free via our website in December. Pupils who submit winning entries will be provided with a printed copy of the calendar for themselves and their school.
We will also use some images on our social media account to promote safety messages.
Winning pupils or teams for both the pictures used in the calendar and on our social media channels will be provided with a winner’s certificate.
Need some ideas? We’ve listed some key safety points to help get you started:
Darker nights safety – e.g. wearing reflective or fluorescent clothing to be safe and be seen. Walking on the pavement, staying with a parent, holding their hand etc.
How to contact the police – 999 for an emergency, 101 is for none emergency. The key information we need is: where you are, your name, what has happened, your address. Sometimes they may need your parent/carers name too. If you accidently call 999 then you won’t be in trouble, just stay on the line and let the call handler know you have called by mistake.
Parents can also report via the force website and through our main force social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter)
Outdoor safety – this can cover a range of things such as: making sure you tell your parents where you are going if playing outside. Making sure you are back home when your parents/carers have asked. Not talking to strangers in the park etc. What to do if someone approaches you – go to a trusted adult, a safe place etc. Not playing on railway lines or in abandoned buildings as they are dangerous.
Bullying and your own safety – what to do if you are being bullied, the consequences of bullying, how it can make people feel and how you can report it. Reporting can be to your parent/carer, your teacher, another trusted adult or the police. You can also talk to ChildLine. This can include cyber bullying and why it is important to be kind online.
Halloween Safety – never eat sweets that have been unwrapped, don’t go into people’s houses, stay with an adult/group of friends. Understand the importance of no trick or treating signs and why these might be up, e.g. person might be unwell or have a baby sleeping.
Christmas Safety - Don’t put presents under your tree too early as they are visible to people through windows, make sure you lock your doors and windows. Encourage parents to set up any new devices for their children in advance and make sure privacy settings and parental controls are on.
Cover picture: We’d love to a see mixture of Police Officers, Police Community Support Officer and Police Staff on your pictures. This could be talking to young people, delivering a school input, talking in the playground etc. You can also reflect on any visits you really enjoyed from us and draw those!
