Sinfonia Viva Bring Classical Favourites and Family Fun To Derby Market Place

Published on Monday 4 October 2021

Grammy award nominated Sinfonia Viva, the Derby-based professional orchestra of the East Midlands will join the entertainment line-up at the Derby Market Place venue this October with four concerts to delight audiences of all ages and a repertoire from classical giants to specially commissioned pieces.

On Wednesday October 6 at 7.30pm, the chamber orchestra, led from the violin by Sophie Rosa and featuring clarinet soloist Chris Swann, will perform a programme of passion and vibrant virtuosity.

With a fantastic range of music and emotional resonance the concert features Coleridge-Taylor’s stunning Clarinet Quintet, the early classical perfection of Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen’s String Quartet No.4 and one of Mozart’s most famous, well-loved and instantly recognisable pieces with his Clarinet Quintet.

The Orchestra will return on Thursday October 21 for a second evening concert, again directed by leader Sophie Rosa who will also play the breath taking violin solo in Piazzolla’s tango-infused Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.  The emotionally-potent programme also includes the hugely popular Bartok Rumanian Folk Dances, Philip Herbert’s Elegy and Tchaikovsky’s devastating and achingly wondrous Serenade for Strings.

Sinfonia Viva, which has a national reputation for its education and community work, will welcome young families for two performances of its award-winning Flutter & Fly concert - a magical musical adventure chock-full of spectacular storytelling.

This concert is a firm favourite with younger children and their families thanks to the relaxed and inclusive atmosphere – immersing the audience in an interactive story of flitting birds, jet planes and a kite tied with string.

All are imaginatively portrayed in sing-along songs written by guitarist and composer Jack Ross and performed with Jack and members of the orchestra, alongside amazing projected illustrations by Eleanor Meredith.

Children also receive a free illustrated book of the story and music so they can relive the adventure again and again.
