Smokefree school gates supports Stoptober

Published on Tuesday 13 October 2020

Stoptober is here again and it’s the ideal time to quit smoking for good. Not just for your health but for the people you love.

Derbyshire primary schools are doing their part to ensure the health and wellbeing of pupils by signing up to Derbyshire County Council’s SmokeFree School Gates initiative.

Already 23 primary schools across the county have installed eye-catching banners, created by their pupils, asking parents to not smoke in the playground or school gate areas.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities, Councillor Carol Hart said: “Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, but also the health of the people you love.

“We’re encouraging schools to sign up to the Smokefree Gates programme to help improve the health of the whole school community.”

Children who have one parent who smokes are over 70% more likely to start smoking than those that don’t.

If that parent is the mother, or if both parents smoke, then it is even more likely.

Passive smoking is especially harmful for children as they have less well-developed airways, lungs and immune systems.

Children who live in a household where at least one person smokes are more likely to develop:

• Asthma
• Chest infections like pneumonia and bronchitis
• Meningitis
• Ear infections
• Coughs and colds

Currently 12.6% of adults in Derbyshire smoke and the areas with the highest prevalence of adult smokers are Erewash, South Derbyshire and Chesterfield.

In addition 17% of 16 year olds in Derbyshire smoke at least once a month.

The SmokeFree Gates initiative is a rolling programme and we are currently inviting expressions of interest from primary schools in Erewash, South Derbyshire and Chesterfield.

If you’re ready to quit for good then Live Life Better Derbyshire offers a free, 12 week, stop smoking support programme for Derbyshire residents.
