Plans unveiled for new sports and community centre in Loscoe
A vision for a new sports and community facility at Charles Hill Loscoe, near Heanor, has moved a step closer.
The Charles Hill Community Interest Company (CIC) comprising local people, sports clubs and community organisations, together with Amber Valley Borough Council and Heanor and Loscoe Town Council, are leading a new project to restore the Charles Hill complex off Flamstead Avenue in Loscoe.
A planning application has been submitted which reveals plans for improved grass junior football pitches to form a local youth football HUB and replacement pavilion to include a multi-use community room. There are also plans for a possible extension of the Red River nature reserve which borders the Charles Hill playing fields.
Councillor John McCabe, the borough council’s cabinet member for the environment stated: "The cost of the new centre, estimated to be £850,000 is being met through a capital commitment from Heanor and Loscoe Town Council and Amber Valley Borough Council, a section 106 local housing developer contribution with the remainder of the funding being sought by the CIC through a range of grant applications. It is hoped that, subject to planning approval, construction could begin by the end of this year and that the new facilities could be ready for use by Summer 2021".
In 2019 the Football Association identified Charles Hill as a key strategic site for the development of youth football as part of its Amber Valley Local Football Facility Plan and it is a priority project for football foundation funding. Whilst football will be a key sport and Charles Hill will become the home venue for Heanor Juniors FC and Loscoe AFC, the CIC and the local councils are keen to stress that the facilities have been designed for the whole community and will host a wide mixture of events, activities and community groups.
John McCulloch, Chairman of the CIC said: "All the members of the Charles Hill Centre CIC are working hard to develop this exciting plan which will secure the future of the site for generations of users. With the support of the council we can now move to the planning application stage. We have 75% of the capital required already secured or committed to make this plan a reality but with the backing of the community and local businesses these facilities will put Charles Hill on the map as a number one sporting and events destination."
Councillor Paul Jones, Leader of Heanor and Loscoe Town Council said: "These are exciting times for people in Loscoe and a real boost to Loscoe and all of the surrounding communities. Approval of the next stage will bring about major changes at the site and will make sure that facilities there can match our aspirations with the CIC to bring a first-class sports and community facility that will benefit the whole of the local area."
