Derbyshire Domestic Abuse Services Receive Funding Boost
Victims of domestic abuse will get more help and support as Derbyshire County Council secures more than £525,000 of funding for services.
Over the next few months the money will be used to support, expand or set up a number of projects and initiatives to give people additional support and advice.
This includes:
• Expansion of the Harmony project in the High Peak which offers specialist refuge for young women and girls who are experiencing abuse and/or exploitation
• Recruiting specialist community workers to improve engagement with black and minority ethnic (BME) and lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) groups across the county
• Recruiting a domestic abuse prevention and support worker to Charis House, a refuge in Buxton for women with complex needs such as substance misuse. This will increase the overall number of safe spaces for victims in the county
• Extending refuges to provide out of hours cover allowing people fleeing domestic abuse to access accommodation out of hours rather than going into Bed and Breakfast accommodation. Some refuges will be extended to a 24hour service and others will provide evening and weekend cover
• Developing a project between Derbyshire’s Domestic Abuse Support Line and the county’s BME forum to make access to the support line easier.
Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said: “This is excellent news for Derbyshire in the whole and shows that together we’re committed to supporting all victims of domestic abuse.
“It’s an awful crime that usually has far reaching and ongoing consequences for everyone involved.
“The new funding will help support services become more joined-up and easily accessible to everyone as well as extending some brilliant services we already provide.”
Families of victims will also benefit from the new funding, which will allow the council to work closer with partner agencies such as Derbyshire police to protect those experiencing abuse.
The county council is one of 13 organisations that jointly applied for the funding, including district and borough councils and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Derbyshire.
Derbyshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Hardyal Dhindsa said: “This funding will support a range of services to help victims and their families rebuild their lives.
"Domestic abuse affects people from all walks of life in every corner of our communities and too often victims feel they have no-one to turn to.
"As this joint bid illustrates, as a partnership we are committed to supporting those at risk in Derbyshire find a route out of the terrifying and depressing cycle of violence, psychological abuse and coercive control that devastates too many lives.
“Domestic abuse comes in many different guises which is why it cannot be addressed by one agency alone. This cohesive approach to tackling the issues involved will, I firmly believe, help some of the most vulnerable members of our communities to cope and recover from their experience.”
The funding is part of £20million handed down by the Government’s Department for Communities and Local Government to support victims of domestic abuse.
