New radios signal link up for police and shops in Heanor
New radios have been given to stores in Heanor which are part of the Amber Valley Shop Watch scheme.
Sixteen additional radios, paid for by funds from the Amber Valley Community Safety Partnership, will give retail staff a direct link to officers and staff at other premises so they can share information about suspicious incidents, anti-social behaviour or crime.
It is hoped that the radio link-up will help police and partner agencies to prevent and target retail related, and help make Heanor, and all towns across the Amber Valley, a safer place to shop.
The new radios were handed over on Thursday, January 5 and so far they have helped police to track down and take action against two people for shoplifting offences.
A 35 year old man from Somercotes has been reported for summons after he was caught stealing three bluetooth speakers from Boyes store, on Market Street on Monday, January 23.
Lee Wayne, 47, of Chatsworth Drive, Hucknall, was arrested and charged with stealing fishing equipment from Boyes on Friday, January 6.
Enquiries found he was also suspected to have been involved in a further six shoplifting offences by Nottinghamshire Police. He was due to appear at magistrate’s court in Nottingham on Monday, January 9, charged with a total of seven offences.
Sgt. Lynsey Curtis , who is in charge of the Heanor and Loscoe Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Shoplifting is an issue that not only affects our local businesses but can also have an impact on other people visiting the town.
“We want Heanor, and other towns within the Amber Valley, to remain a safe place to shop and the Shop Watch scheme has proved to be valuable time and time again, especially as more stores sign up.
“It’s a real boost to the scheme to have these new radios, and will help to ensure that we maintain a good and direct link between the police and local retail staff in Heanor.”
Councillor Jane Orton, Amber Valley Cabinet Member for Community Safety commented: "I am delighted that these new radios have proved such an immediate success. This demonstrates how the Shop Watch radio scheme, enables shopkeepers to help tackle crime and make our towns a better place to do business and safe for local residents and visitors."
The new radios have been loaned to retailers in Heanor, Alfreton, Belper and Ripley by the Amber Valley Community Safety Partnership.
