New Blueprint For Derbyshire Bus Services

Published on Thursday 26 January 2017

Local passengers are set to be invited to join forces with Derbyshire County Council to a draw up a blueprint for how future bus services in the county could be run.

Next week (Tuesday 31 January) council Cabinet members will consider a proposal which would see representatives from passenger groups and bus companies working alongside council officers to develop a new Derbyshire Bus Strategy.

The new plan is being worked up to reflect the need to make changes to local bus services because of cuts to funding and changes in the law.

It had been proposed to withdraw all council funding for subsidised buses from October 2017. Currently the council puts in around £4.2m to pay for these services.

Following consultation, where more than 90% of people who responded said they disagreed with the proposal to withdraw funding, county councillors reviewed the plan and agreed to continue some funding.

However, this will gradually reduce over the next four years to £2.7m in 2020/2021.

A new national Bus Services Bill is also due to become law later this year giving local authorities more say in how local bus services could be run.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure Councillor Dean Collins, said: “By 2020 we will have a third less to spend on services than in 2010 so we cannot continue to run them as before. But we recognise just how important bus services are to helping people retain their independence so we remain committed to looking at innovative ways of making bus services viable in the future.”

Representatives from passenger groups and local bus operators, businesses and the health and education sectors and community and voluntary groups, will be asked to put their ideas forward.

These initial ideas will then be put out to wider public consultation later this year.

Councillor Collins added: “The long term aim is to increase the number of people using buses to make services sustainable in the future.

"Naturally, people have different opinions on how this can be done. We think by pulling together ideas from various sources we can come up with a blueprint to develop value for money services in the future that really meet peoples’ travel needs.”
