Police warn youngsters about dangers of swimming in quarries and reservoirs

Published on Saturday 30 July 2016

Police are reminding young people of the dangers of swimming in lakes, reservoirs and rivers ahead of the school summer holidays.

Officers from the Hadfield and Tintwistle Safer Neighbourhood Team are raising awareness of the dangers of swimming in open places, including Bottoms Reservoir, Swineshaw Reservoir, and the River Etherow near Hadfield.

Open water such as lakes, reservoirs and other sites like disused, water-filled quarries can be extremely dangerous even for experienced swimmers.

Officers are urging people not to go in the water to cool down if the weather is hot as they could endanger their own lives and the lives of others.

PCSO Tracey Collins, from the team, said: “It can be tempting to people, especially when the weather hots up, to jump in or go for a swim, but the hidden dangers are immense and can quickly lead to something altogether more serious.

“Hidden, strong currents, sudden drops, steep sides and icy waters mean that even strong swimmers can get into trouble. It isn’t worth the huge risk so please enjoy the sun safely and stay out of the water.”

Derbyshire officers were called to assist colleagues from Greater Manchester Police last week following reports that a 16-year-old boy had gone into the River Etherow, near the Greater Manchester and Charlesworth border.

Police and firefighters searched the water and the youngster’s body was found later that evening. There are no suspicious circumstances.
