Extensive Repairs Now Completed At Iconic Heage Windmill
Heage Windmill, the last working stone tower six-sailed windmill in Britain and the only working windmill in Derbyshire producing stone ground flour the traditional way, has been returned to her former glory.
Fully restored in 2002, the weather had taken its toll on the windmill over the past two decades and extensive repairs have been necessary. Work on the sails and cap were carried out in 2023 and now repair work on the stone tower has been completed.
Built from locally quarried stone, wind and rain had eroded the tower allowing water ingress in places and increasing damp in the building. Following consultation with Historic England, a plan to repair and refurbish the stone work was approved and work started last Autumn. Local Heritage Conservationist Andrew Churchman was tasked with carrying out the work returning the mill to how she would have looked in the late 1800s.
The work has been principally funded by a Restoration Grant from the Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA), the national society for industrial heritage, which has supported the study, preservation and presentation of industrial heritage in Britain since 1973 (https://industrial-archaeology.org). Additional financial support was also received from The Headley Trust.
The work ensures that Heage Windmill, one of the highest rated East Midland attractions in visitor reviews, can continue to educate and enthral whilst passing on the traditional skills of millwrighting and milling.
