Heanor Happy Cafe hopes to be a hit

Published on Monday 25 September 2023

Monthly Happy Café events are now taking place at the new Infinite Wellbeing Community Centre in Heanor.

A Happy Café is part of the Action for Happiness charity and movement which aims to create a happier and kinder world.

Happy Cafes are a welcoming space for anyone interested in happiness and wellbeing. People can connect over tea/coffee, discover, and share ideas for living a happier life. The first Happy Cafe was set up in Brighton in October 2014, with the aim of providing a meeting place for local people to learn about scientifically proven methods to improve happiness and personal wellbeing.

The idea to set up a Happy Cafe in Heanor comes from Langley Mill resident and Action for Happiness volunteer Eleanor McNally (Just As Well with El on Facebook) who is passionate about health, wellbeing and community engagement. Eleanor said: “I read about the Happy Café initiative via the Action for Happiness website and it sounded like a perfect project to support. I then got talking with the directors at Infinite Wellbeing earlier this year as they were getting ready to launch the new community space in the old Heanor Methodist Church and we all agreed this could be a great way to make a really positive difference to the happiness of the local community and beyond”.

The first event took place on 10th August and included an introduction to Action for Happiness, a happiness quiz, group discussions and a craft activity. Feedback so far has been very positive with attendees saying:
“Very easy going talks and relaxed atmosphere”
“The discussions and ideas of mindful happiness was lovely”
“Beautiful venue, great energy, positivity”

The next session will take place on Thursday 5 October 2023 6-8pm and will focus on themes of self-care and optimism. Cheryl Beckworth - Director at Infinite Wellbeing and Owner of Grounded Goddess is the guest speaker and will be talking about the importance of self-care, why it's a necessity and how to make our own self-care circles.

Further activities are also being planned for “New ways November”.

Happy Café evenings are free to attend and there is no need to book but to help with planning, please email happyheanor@outlook.com to confirm your interest or ask any questions.

Attendees can purchase healthy and homemade food from the Infinite Wellbeing community café during the evening and there is always a wide selection of freshly baked cakes available.

Happy Café updates will be posted regularly on Eleanor’s ‘Just As Well with El’ Facebook page. For more local community wellbeing events visit: www.infinite-wellbeing.co.uk.  To find out more about Action for Happiness visit: www.actionforhappiness.org.
