Places Leisure Launch Employer Academy With DCG

Published on Tuesday 6 October 2020

Derby College Group (DCG) has teamed up with Places Leisure to launch a new Employer Academy for Sports students based at Broomfield Hall college.

Students on the Places Leisure Employer Academy will work one day a week alongside staff at three of the Leisure Centre’s that the company runs on behalf of Amber Valley Borough Council – William Gregg VC Leisure Centre in Heanor and Alfreton and Ripley Leisure Centre’s.

Amber Valley Contract Training and Development Manager Karen Morden has been a long-standing member of DCG’s Sport and Leisure Employment and Skills Board which brings together key employers who co-design and co-deliver the curriculum.

She said: “We decided to further develop our relationship with DCG and set up an Employer Academy to provide better structure to our work experience programme.

“The students will work alongside our fitness team supporting Fitness Instruction, Personal Training (PT) and Group Exercise programme delivery as well as learning behind the scenes tasks such as administration, equipment checks and class preparation.

“This will hopefully help them to see the bigger picture about the wide range of job roles and progression routes available to them in their future careers.

“The key message to students through the Employer Academy programme is that key employability skills such as customer service and communication are just as important as the sport-specific qualifications and that developing these will open more doors to them as they progress.

“We are hoping to be able to offer casual paid employment to the students in the future and aim to offer further opportunities to students in future years.”

Debbie Keegan, DCG’s Assistant Director of Learner and Employer Partnerships, added: “This is a great opportunity for our students who have their sights set on a career in sport and leisure.

“It will help them to develop their CVs and potentially open doors for paid employment in the future.”
