Investment to create 100 new parking spaces in Belper

Published on Wednesday 30 September 2020

A car park remodelling, which will provide up to 100 additional parking spaces in Belper town centre, is to be considered by Amber Valley Borough Council on 30 September.

A meeting of the Full Council will be asked to give the go-ahead to the remodelling of Field Lane Car Park at a cost of £437,000. The land was originally purchased and prepared some years ago by the borough council for a leisure centre project, for a total cost of £1.1 million. The leisure centre project was later shelved due to lack of available funds.

At the same meeting members will be asked to approve plans for the roll-out of contactless pay and display machines in the council’s car parks.

With the recent loss of the Derwent Street car park, which was managed by Belper Town Council, it had become clear that during peak periods there was insufficient parking within the town centre, leading to motorists experiencing frustration and localised congestion producing increased C02 emissions.

Commented Amber Valley Borough Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Community Safety, Councillor Ben Bellamy, "This land has never been properly utilised since it was bought. In the interests of supporting local traders, and attracting shoppers with a safe and attractive town centre environment, it is crucial that we are able to provide ample car parking. These proposals will make a vital contribution to sustaining and stimulating business in Belper town centre. In addition, the car park will see electric vehicle charging points, already agreed by council.

"We are also pleased to be considering the installation of more contactless pay and display machines throughout Amber Valley. We already have 18 in operation and believe these machines are particularly important at the moment, during the COVID crisis."
