Man jailed for assaulting police officer
A man who assaulted a police officer and ripped her radio from her uniform so she could not call for back-up has been jailed.
Robert Wilshere has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting an emergency worker by beating.
We received a call at 6.30pm on Wednesday 9 September to reports of a disturbance at a house in Critchley Street, Ilkeston. When the officer arrived at the scene, Wilshere answered the door and she entered the house.
She believed Wilshere had committed an assault on a member of the public and told told him he was being arrested. Wilshere then became violent, pulling the officer to the ground, punching and strangling her.
He pulled her radio from her uniform and threw it, leaving the officer unable to call for help. She eventually managed to reach her radio and press the emergency button. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.
The officer received medical treatment and as is being supported by her colleagues.
Chief Superintendent Dave Cox said: “This was a despicable attack on one of our officers, who was responding to a 999 call about a disturbance at a house.
“She was understandably left shaken by what happened but she is determined to move on and continue in her role to serve the public of Derbyshire.
“I am very proud of her and the commitment she has shown. Attacks on emergency workers are simply unacceptable and I hope this sentence reflects that.”
Wilshere (28) of Boweswell Road, Ilkeston, was sentenced at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Friday 11 September.
