Heanor town centre future outlined in £13m plan
Exciting plans to regenerate Heanor town centre have been submitted with the prospect of securing Government funding of almost £13m.
The Government’s Future High Streets Fund, worth a total of £675 million, is designed to help town centres adapt to new challenges and evolve, bringing about transformative change.
The key to a successful town in the modern era is to have a centre which allows people to live, work and enjoy the facilities on their doorstep, and the borough council’s second stage bid for funding reflects these elements. The plan was compiled following a period of public consultation in October last year and includes the following proposals.
Heart of Heanor. Establishing the historic heart of the town back to the Market Place and creating a vibrant space. This includes redesigning the public realm, developing flexible space to create areas to support business and events and the remodelling of the road network, improving cycle and pedestrian accessibility to the town centre, contributing to Healthy Heanor and creating a sense of place.
Heanor Hub. Diversifying the local economy, bringing job creation and skills opportunities through the proposed comprehensive refurbishment scheme of the Grade II Listed former Grammar School, to develop a mixed-use business enterprise, community and leisure hub. The site development, including the non-listed vacant buildings, will aim to incorporate a 3-screen cinema with restaurants to diversify the town centre, promoting evening and weekend economy.
Heanor is Home. Delivering affordable town centre living on underused land located parallel to High Street. Create town centre living and develop Shared Ownership, attracting new residents to further use the high street, bringing vitality are key features.
It is anticipated the council will hear in the autumn if the bid has been successful and if so work would be completed by March 2024.
Commented Amber Valley Borough Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Community Safety, Councillor Ben Bellamy: "This is a hugely exciting plan, shaped by the people of Heanor, which would deliver considerable benefits to local residents, businesses and visitors. If the bid is successful we would be looking to get work underway this year."
