DCG Students Showcase Creative Talents

Published on Tuesday 30 June 2020

Students across Derby College Group (DCG) have been embracing digital platforms to showcase their work.

Fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians, artists, designers and performing artists who are based at the Joseph Wright Centre Academic and Creative Industries college in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter have launched a digital exhibition www.derby-college.ac.uk/digital-exhibition

The dedicated section on the College website features each student’s work with a short introduction to explain their inspiration and approach to the piece. The exhibition ranges from Fine Art to a compilation of work produced by Performing Arts students both at College and in their kitchens.

Meanwhile five Games Development students have clinched top prizes in a global game jam entitled Sidequest.

A team entitled ‘A Friendly Potato’ made up of DCG Level three students Edwin Neaves, Joshua Dobson, Luke Allen and William Bridge-Powsey won a gold medal with their game ‘Steam Teams’ – featuring unique steampunk art style and music.

The bronze medal was won by fellow student Ben Phillis aka ‘Average Mortal’ whose game ‘Rhythm of the Fight’ was commended by judges for enabling one player to control four different characters.

DCG Vice Principal Kate Martin said: “We would usually be opening our doors at the Joseph Wright Centre to showcase the fantastic work by the next generation of creative talent.

“It is very important in times like this to turn negatives into positives and these students and their teachers have faced the challenges head on with great results.

“Just as everyone across the college has embraced online teaching and communications during lockdown, the digital exhibition is a fantastic platform to be able to browse the students’ work on the internet.

“Many of the curriculum areas have also been looking at different ways to provide students with virtual work experience and the Sidequest games jam has given our Games Development students an insight into this growing industry which has been rewarded with recognition by the international judges.”
