Special Milling Day At Heage Windmill
Anthony Sharpe , one of the mill team has sent in the following report on a busy day at Heage Windmill on Saturday 21st March.
Saturday March 21st, was a special opening day for Heage Windmill.
At very short notice last Friday it was decided to have a special open the Mill Shop on the Saturday as a result of many requests for flour from many keen bakers. ‘I didn't realise baking was such a popular leisure activity and for many Heage Windmill Flour is the flour to use ’ said Anthony
Saturday, with a good wind forecast, was also going to be a good milling day and the sails turning would be a bonus for those coming to buy flour. We had about 60 bags of flour on the shelves ready for sale at the start of the day.
Amazingly the shelves were very soon all but empty as baking enthusiasts flocked to the mill, and then the 'emergency' decision was made to bag and sell the flour which was then being milled. Normally the bagging of the flour would be on a separate occasion.
So Jenny Land collected the sacks of freshly milled flour from Millers Tim Castledine ( on left) and Alan Eccleston and Anthoy Sharpe (who took the photos).
Jenny bagged the flour in the Undercroft no room in the mill, where milling was in full swing.
Over 100 bags were sold in total. The shop closed at 2.00pm but the milling went on until 4.00pm to help build up stock
While the shop was busy selling flour David Land set up a small bric a brac on a mill wall.
This added to the great fun feeling of the morning. Some visitors were disappointed as flour ran out, but in the lovely sunshine there was a great spirit of common cause as well there was a great ‘joie de vivre.’v
