Forces-friendly council receives award

Published on Friday 6 March 2020

The presentation of a certificate, marking Amber Valley Borough Council’s achievement of the Armed Forces Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze Award, was held before the full council meeting on 2 March.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) encourages employers to support the armed forces and inspire others to do the same. And, as a bronze award employer, the council has signed the Armed Forces Covenant and pledged to support the armed forces, including existing or prospective employees who are members of the community.

Award holders must also demonstrate that they are promoting being armed forces-friendly and are open to employing reservists, armed forces veterans (including the wounded, injured and sick), cadet instructors and military spouses/partners.

The council signed the Armed Forces Covenant when it was introduced in 2011. It stated that it is a ‘promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives’.

In February the council’s cabinet agreed to an action plan to underpin its covenant commitment. This includes the continuing promotion of free access to the council’s leisure centres for serving personnel, their partners and dependants’ resident in the borough. It is also now looking to expand this free access to Belper Leisure Centre.

Deputy cabinet member for housing and public health, Councillor Maurice Neville, commented: "It is estimated that there are over 2 million ex-service personnel in the UK. Then of course there are serving personnel and the families of both. Most people have some link to the armed forces via family or friends. The military is a fundamental part of our society. It has been my privilege to act as Forces Champion since and to work with our officer team to make sure this council fully honours its commitment to the military covenant."
