February half term adventures in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire

Published on Saturday 15 February 2020

Come rain or shine, families in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire can look forward to a week of fun-filled adventures at National Trust places this February half term.

Jo Armstrong from the National Trust says: ‘If you’re looking after little ones this half term, your local National Trust places are a great spot for enjoying some of the simple pleasures that Mother Nature has to offer at this time of year. You can don your wellies and splash through puddles, spot snowdrops peeking through the soil or use your imagination to turn a humble stick into a ship’s mast, a knight’s sword or a magic wand.

‘You’ll also find activities like nature-inspired trails, wild art and welly walks. Even better – every visit you make helps the Trust to carry on looking after these special local places for everyone to enjoy.’

Here’s a sneak peek at what half term has in store at the National Trust places in and around Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire

There’s something for everyone to enjoy at Clumber Park this half term, from animal-inspired crafts in the Discovery Centre to lakeside strolls. Pick up a bike from the Cycle Hub and explore more than 20 miles of cycle trails – perfect for the whole family. After your adventure, visit the ice cream parlour between 12noon and 3pm for waffles and ice cream.  For a different perspective, be sure to book onto one of the free pontoon tours to see the conservation work on the Ornamental Bridge.

Hardwick, Derbyshire

After winter conservation work, Hardwick Hall is ready to welcome you. There are new challenges ‘Below Stairs’, so be sure to complete the ‘50 things to do before you’re 11¾’ challenges as you explore. For a breath of fresh air, why not get the wellies out and try the Welly Walk? Explore the many acres of woodland and parkland at Hardwick and get closer to nature. After your indoor and outdoor adventure, warm up in the Great Barn Restaurant with a hot chocolate or one of the delicious sweet treats on offer.

Longshaw, Burbage and the Eastern Moors, Derbyshire

Explore the woodlands and be a nature detective at Longshaw this half term, which also happens to be National Nest Box Week. Pick up a woodland bird spotter sheet and discover the world of birds and their special habitats, while seeing the results of special conservation efforts from National Trust rangers. The team plant native trees and monitor bird boxes across the estate to build up records that identify the different species that make their home at Longshaw.
