Amber Valley set to benefit from Get Out Get Active
Amber Valley residents will have more opportunities to get active thanks to the Get Out Get Active programme coming to the area.
Get Out Get Active was created by Activity Alliance in 2016 to bring disabled and non-disabled people together to be active.
It engages some of the least active communities in fun, inclusive ways.
A partnership comprising Derbyshire County Council’s public health localities team, Amber Valley Borough Council’s community sport and wellbeing team and Active Derbyshire has been working hard to secure funding for the work of more than £200,000.
Amber Valley Borough Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Health, Councillor Maurice Neville said: "The borough council is delighted to be playing a key role in this programme and we look forward to seeing tangible benefits delivered for the people of Amber Valley."
Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Carol Hart, who is also a board member for Active Derbyshire said: "We’re pleased to be partnering with Get Out Get Active so that people in Amber Valley will be able to improve their health and wellbeing."
"Keeping Derbyshire happy and healthy is a key priority for us and ensuring that more people are encouraged into sport and activities is just one way that we are working with a wide range of partners to ensure this."
Stuart Batchelor, Director of Active Derbyshire, said: "We are delighted to be working closely with a range of partners to enable physical activity to become the norm for people who live and work in communities across Amber Valley."
Amber Valley is one of 21 locations across the UK benefiting from funding and the Amber Valley GOGA programme will see a wide range of activities taking place.
Working in close consultation with local residents a programme of activities will be developed and as part of that a new development officer role is being advertised this month.
GOGA is about more than being active. It strengthens community spirit, increases confidence and improves mental health.
It increases the demand for, and the accessibility of, activities. These may be provided by local authorities, sports clubs or the voluntary sector.
In September 2019 Spirit of 2012, awarded a further £3 million to GOGA across the UK.
At the same time, Sport England also invested an additional £1 million into England and London Marathon Charitable Trust recently revealed a £1 million grant investment too.
During the first phase of funding there were 18 GOGA locations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Starting in April 2020, phase two will have 21 locations including Amber Valley. For more information, visit www.getoutgetactive.co.uk
