Council motion rejects London train services proposals
Amber Valley Borough Council members will be asked to support a motion which rejects a proposal to withdraw train services to London from Alfreton and Langley Mill, when they meet on 29 January.
The motion, to be considered at the full council meeting, has been proposed by Deputy Leader of the council, Councillor Ben Bellamy, in response to the threat from East MIdlands Railway. The company has announced a plan to withdraw London services from the two local stations. Says Councillor Bellamy in his motion: "These changes will severely affect the residents of both these parishes and could ultimately affect their economic future."
In the same motion Councillor Bellamy also encourages the council to implore East Midlands Railway to introduce direct services from Belper to London St Pancras and increase services to Sheffield. He says: "We reject the premise for not introducing the services, that it would delay trains to Sheffield. People of Amber Valley are every bit as important as the people of Sheffield and should not be forced to make long and inconvenient diversions to save a few minutes up the line."
If the motion is passed, the council will make its feelings on the proposed timetable changes known to East Midlands Railway and will also write to the Secretary of State for Transport and local MPs, urging them to use their influence to ensure that Amber Valley gets a modern, connected rail service that it deserves, with regular, direct services to London and Sheffield from local towns’ stations.
