Expanded Recycling Programme Supports Butterfly Appeal
A mobile phones recycling initiative to support a Derby charity has been expanded thanks to intu Derby.
Anyone with an unwanted mobile phone can now drop them off at the Customer Service [CS1] desk at intu Derby.
They will be collected regularly by Sinfin-based Century Mobile who will arrange recycling and all money collected will be donated to child sexual exploitation (CSE) specialist charity Safe and Sound.
The charity is raising funds through its Butterfly Appeal to expand work across Derbyshire to raise awareness of CSE and support children and young people targeted by perpetrators.
Specific short term projects include embedding youth work into the charity’s offering and appointing a specialist worker to support the families of young grooming and exploitation victims.
Safe and Sound CEO Tracy Harrison said: “We are over the moon that intu Derby have come on board to expand the mobile phone recycling initiative which will make it much easier for people to support us in this way.
“The timing is perfect as I am sure that many people will have received or bought new mobile phones for Christmas and now have a worthwhile and easy way to dispose of unwanted handsets.
“By simply donating an old, unused handset, we can raise vital funds for the Butterfly Appeal to help us to support even more young people who are vulnerable to or currently facing sexual exploitation.
“CSE not only affects the children and young people targeted by perpetrators but their whole family and the Butterfly Appeal will enable us to support them as well as providing the vital education across the wider public to make them aware of the dangers facing our local communities.
“Alongside the scheme, we are also stepping up our awareness raising work in schools and particularly to highlight the importance of social media online privacy settings due to the worrying increase in online grooming.”
Adam Tamsett, general manager of intu Derby said: “We are proud to be working with Safe and Sound to support the Butterfly Appeal.
“We hope intu Derby can provide a convenient location for more unwanted mobile phones to be donated for recycling to support this local charity.”
