Derbyshire saves vital bus service

Published on Saturday 28 December 2019

A bus route serving Shipley View, Ilkeston, Breadsall and Derby has been saved by Derbyshire County Council after the commercial operator said it would no longer provide the service.

Service 59 was run commercially by operator YourBus, until they ceased trading at the start of October. Then Notts & Derby stepped in to provide the service, until they found that passenger numbers were lower than expected. The company said they would run the service until 24 December 2019.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Communities, Councillor Carol Hart explained:

“We know that many people rely on the 59 to go shopping and to get to health appointments and if the service was to disappear this would leave people in West Hallam, Stanley Common, Shipley View, Morley, Brackley Gate and Breadsall stranded.

"So I’m pleased that the county council will now pay for a broadly similar 59 service to start on 27 December.

"However in order to find the money to pay for service 59 we have decided to cancel the evening and Sunday service 11. The number of people using this service is low and the amount we pay to subsidise the service is very high."

The 11 only runs during evenings and on Sundays in the Ilkeston area and will stop at the end of February 2020.

Service 59 is used by around 100,000 passengers a year, with service 11 used by around 11,000 passengers a year.

The new service 59 will run on a slightly revised timetable to avoid running at similar times to the Black Cat service, meaning a more useful service for places such as West Hallam, which is served by both of these routes. It will also provide some journeys along Brookside Road in Breadsall.

You can view the new timetable on Public Transport in Derbyshire.
