Getting Green Fingered As Capita Travel And Events Supports Langley Mill Community Allotment Project

Published on Thursday 12 December 2019

Employees from Capita Travel and Events swapped laptops and desks for shovels and wheelbarrows to volunteer at a community allotment in Langley Mill, Derbyshire.

Ten team members from the Derby head office took part in the volunteering day having heard about the local initiative to transform an abandoned allotment into a thriving area and sensory garden for the whole community to enjoy, including local schools, businesses and residents. The project’s aim is to engage young people in the benefits of allotments and encouraging them to take responsibility for growing their own vegetables.

Throughout the day, the Capita volunteers created a new car parking area, painted sheds and tables, cleared overgrown greenery and laid surface areas so the Heanor and Langley Mill Safer Neighbourhood Team can optimise the area with further developments to create a safe environment for all ages to benefit from.

“When I saw they were looking for local volunteers to help out with the allotment transformation, I thought it would be a fantastic project to get involved in and I’m really pleased that we could help out. Despite the mud and aching muscles, we all had a great day getting stuck in and it brought the whole team closer. Not only was it rewarding to support something so close to our office, but the smallest of jobs have made a big difference and the allotment is already on its way to becoming the hub for this local community,” says Katie Blount, Senior Change Manager, who led this initiative for Capita Travel and Events.

“We started this initiative to build relationships and break down barriers with the community of Langley Mill, both young and old. Following one of our Facebook posts about the project, we were delighted when Katie reached out to get involved,” says PC David Norcross, who is responsible for this initiative.

“The team from Capita Travel and Events gave up their time to join us in helping to transform the allotment. The team were absolutely fantastic; there was a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun and laughter too! They all worked incredibly hard on a very cold day, and now the allotment is starting to move in the right direction. We would like to say a massive thank you to all the volunteers for the help and support they have given us in this project.”

A number of other local businesses are supporting this project, including Langley Mill and Aldercar Parish Council, B&Q, Broughtons and Imperial.

A number of team members are also getting involved in individual volunteering projects across their local areas.
