Climate change emergency considered in major housing development
Several elements aimed at addressing the climate change emergency have been included in the development at Kedleston Road and Memorial Road, Allestree, that was considered by Amber Valley Borough Council’s planning board recently.
For the first time in the borough, the layout of the 400-home site has been designed to allow the installation of infrastructure for electric vehicle charging points at each house, enabling residents to adopt a greener way of life.
The scheme also involves a significant net gain in tree planting which has environmental and biodiversity benefits. The details will need to be submitted to and approved in writing by the council.
As up to 340 plots would be suitably orientated to facilitate solar panels, the council is also encouraging the developer to incorporate them at the development’s construction rather than retrofit, for an improved visual appearance.
Commenting, Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams, Leader of the Council, said "This results from excellent negotiation by our planning officers and the forward thinking of the developer. The initiatives will contribute to our climate change agenda and benefit the home buyers. We will be looking for more developers to come forward with similar schemes."
