Police visit school in Tibshelf as part of project to help call full time anti-social behaviour

Published on Wednesday 5 June 2019

Derbyshire Police's dedicated football officers have spent time with students at a school in Tibshelf as part of an initiative to help call full time on anti-social behaviour.

PCs Dave Wright and Adam Collins held a session at Tibshelf Community School, where they spoke about the history behind football disorder, and discussed cases where incidents have led to people being injured, killed or jailed as a result.

It is part of a series of ongoing visits to local schools and colleges, which are designed to help young people to realise the risks and consequences of anti-social behaviour, and encourage them not to become involved in football related disorder.

Officers discussed how these issues can affect the individual, including future career prospects, their families, the reputation of the football club they support along with other sanctions that could be imposed by the regulatory bodies and the courts.

The talks have been organised as part of the Safer Together campaign, which has so far seen several events held across Derbyshire to engage with local communities and help raise awareness of new investment in the force, which will see 120 new posts created working to improve police presence in neighbourhoods, help protect vulnerable residents  and bolster investigations.

PC Dave Wright said: “It has been identified that there is an emerging issue on a national, but also locally, around anti-social behaviour and younger people at football fixtures. It is important that our work includes educating, safeguarding and ultimately helping to prevent young people from becoming involved in anti-social behaviour and offending at football matches across Derbyshire.

“The aim behind the sessions is to educate and raise awareness of the potential but very real consequences and risks of football related disorder, and to help young people to make the right choices, which could prevent them from going to court as the result of their actions and protect them and others from harm.”

He added: “Our football policing unit is committed to working with all football clubs in the county to help ensure the safety and enhance the match day experience for fans attending games in Derbyshire.”

The session took place on Thursday, May 23.
